simmering in purple sand,
I am rock upon rock upon gravel

when Steph said home isn’t a place
I threw out                   the map

I draw bullet marginalia,
            digging rust from printed line

            wrinkles beginning to burn
sizzle metal doubt waxing
            overgrown shin hair

            pantomiming rainbow
            no one guesses
until her dandruff       found closed eyes
                                                                promised coordinates

                                                                             her

                                                                                          hand was the quietest
                                                                                          I ever held
                                                                newborn before us
                                                                not         ours    by science

his

        shoulder blades
sharp with liquid shadow
        his
                          hand
        a rough sketch &

the only hand my heritage will accept
