Fire Ant
by Molly Girard

Runestone, volume 12

Under a microscope
on a sunny day,
each movement of syringe-small muscle
becomes an earthquake pulse.

No formaldehyde needed:
scrutiny alone burns.

No sheer-cleavered wing of mine
will be lucky enough to find itself
pinned in a museum box.
All remnants of me
slowly simmer on the pavement:
are assigned no scientific name.
